Dr. Curtis Hayes Selected for CO CURE Project
Posted By: admin
Dr. Curtis Hayes is honored to be selected by peers to serve on a committee providing dental-specific “best practice guidelines” of non-opioid treatments for the CO CURE Project.
The CO CURE Project
The CO CURE is a project from the Colorado Hospital Association, Colorado Medical Society and Colorado Consortium for Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention launched to address the opioid epidemic in Colorado. CURE stands for “Clinicians United to Resolve the Epidemic”. CO CURE brings together various specialties committed to resolving the opioid epidemic in Colorado by developing targeted and specific guidelines.
CO CURE has partnered with several major healthcare associations as well as the Colorado Dental Association (CDA). Their goal is to bring awareness for responsible prescription practices among healthcare and dental providers, namely opioid-based pain management techniques.
Colorado Dental Association and CURE
The CDA has picked Dr. Hayes to be part of a group of experts to serve on a panel and collaborate on dental-specific “best practice guidelines” of non-opioid treatments to incorporate into private practice. As an oral surgeon, Dr. Hayes was recommended by other dental specialists for his considerable experience in non-opioid pain management.
The committee of dentists will meet multiple times throughout the next several months. They will: review relevant literature on opioid and non-opioid medications, identify common dental treatments that have previously relied on opioids for patients, and develop evidence-based protocols for dentists to use non-opioid medication strategies to limit the use of narcotics. Their findings should publish and be available by as early as 2020.
Because dental procedures and oral surgeries — such as wisdom tooth removal — are one of the first encounters that people have with narcotics. Dental specialists play an important role in limiting the availability of opioids and the risk of dependency or abuse. Especially among patients, their family members, and close friends.
Dr. Hayes has been active in incorporating safe, non-narcotic pain management strategies for several years. His role promoting healthier, safer care for patients and their families will further the mission of the CO CURE Project.
